Report by Graham Oram – Boys U16 Manager
The Regional Finals for the Under 16’s Boys were held at Haywards Heath Golf Club on Sunday 28 September. The opponents were Surrey, who topped the Southern Group with a 100% record, and BB&O, who were victorious in the Central Group on count back from Essex.
Our boys were there by topping the Northern Group, which was made up by Norfolk and Suffolk.
The practice round was on the Saturday, when the eight boys were meticulously prepared for the encounter ahead by coach Matt Spencer.
The format for the final was a 3 way singles match play. It soon became evident that Surrey were the strong favourites.
Meanwhile our boys were locked in a titanic struggle with BB&O, with the early scores fluctuating first one way then the other.
There were early victories by Louis Batrick – Wren and Ollie Bannister and a half point was secured by 12 year old Marcus Karim, which would ultimately prove vital.
Ollie Ockelford, playing only his second match for Hertfordshire, but on this showing destined to play many more, gained a vital victory on the 18th and with Ronnie Seagroatt also closing out his match on the last hole our boys had defeated BB&O by 4 ½ – 3 ½ . Ronnie Seagroatt, playing at number one also had the satisfaction of registering our only success against Surrey, when he overcame his opponent on the 16th hole.
There was to be no success on the day for Billy Paas, George Lancaster or Captain, River Gardiner, but they are all valued members of the team and each had played a significant part in getting the team to this Regional Final.
