Our end of season County Knockout Finals Day event took place last Sunday, 5th October, at a bright but very breezy Brickendon Grange GC. The day saw 6 finals take place with four differing formats of play.Â
The first match out was he Womens Powell Cup final, played as a Scratch Foursomes match between representative pairs on behalf of their clubs. This year the final take place between Hadley Wood, represented by Julie Nedza & Debbie Lear, against Aldwickbury Park, represented by Elaine Meager & Lucinda Mileham. The final was won by the Hadley Wood pair by the margin of 5&3. This was the first time Hadley Wood had won the Powell Cup event this Century.Â
The next two finals were both handicap singles events, the Members Cup for the Men and the De Paula Cup for the Women. The Members Cup saw Mark Wiley of The Hertfordshire take on Eugene Meehan of Sandy Lodge. Only 1 shot separated the two players handicaps so a tight match was expected and that was the case, with the match decided on the 18th green with Mark Wiley winning by the margin of 2 up. In the Womens De Paula Cup there was more of a disparity between handicaps with Cindy Xhang of Brocket Hall receiving 9 shots from opponent Carolyn Andrews of West Herts. But with the windy conditions the lower handicap player adjusted better and Carolyn won the match and the title by the margin of 5&3.Â
In the Mixed Greensomes KO event the defending champions Michelle & Andy Gardner of Brookmans Park retained their trophy with a strong win over the Old Fold Manor pairing of Birgitte Karle & Neil Hewitt by the margin of 5&4.Â
The last two finals on the course both required extra holes to determine our winners, both played in dwindling light in the late afternoon/early evening. The Womens Fourball KO was eventually won by Ashleigh Davis & Alison Cunningham of Brookmans Park on the 20th hole against Lena Wang & Nitu Bajekal of Hadley Wood. Particularly impressive as the Brookmans pair were 2 down with 2 to play and won 17 & 18 to take the match to extra holes. In the Herts Team Cup match Moor Park Artisans took on The Shire London in 4 evenly matched games of fourball betterball handicap matches. A 2-2 tied match and level on holes up and down for each side required the 1st pairs to go back out on the course to play a sudden death play off to determine the winners. A birdie from one of the pair on the 1st hole, the downhill par 5 hole, saw Moor Park Artisans crowned the winners in exciting circumstances.Â
Our thanks to Brickendon Grange for hosting us on the day and congratulations to all the competitors on the day for reaching their respective finals.Â
