Rule of the Week

Marking your ball

A player asks his opponent (or fellow competitor) to mark their ball one putter head to the right so it wasn’t on their line of play. The ball had not yet been marked and the opponent placed his putter head next to right hand side of the ball and moved their ball to the new position. Is there a penalty for not marking the ball in the traditional way?

ANSWER

NO  – Rule 14.1a allows the ball to be marked in this way. Rule 15.3c requires the ball to be replaced by reversing the steps used to move the ball out of the way.
