Shirley Aylwin

It is with great sadness that we report the recent passing of Shirley Aylwin of Ashridge Golf Club.

Shirley was a major figure in Womens Amateur Golf, both within Hertfordshire and on a Regional and National level.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Shirley was a regular County 1st Team player, winning the Ashridge Club Championship 10 times and was runner up in the English Senior Ladies Championship in 1989.

Adminstratively, Shirley was Chair of the Herts County Ladies Golf Association (HCLGA) and then the Chair of the South East Region of the Ladies Golf Union (LGU). Nationally she was Vice Chair, Chair and eventually President of the LGU.

Shirley was the driver of the Powell Cup event, a club foursomes knockout ran over the season, in Hertfordshire, donating the trophy that is still played for today. For many years the final match was played at Ashridge GC and Shirley would turn up to present the trophy to the winners and still had a keen interest in the event in more recent years when she was less able to be present on the day.

We offer our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time to Shirley’s family and friends, of which she had made so many over the years around the County.
