Our individual Junior Spring Meeting events were played yesterday, played in conjuction with our team Junior Champion Club event, with a full field of 72 juniors taking part played at Redbourn Golf Club.Â
After the recent mild and dry spell in weather of late, the conditions on the day were rather wet on arrival with constant drizzle, great for the greenstaff across the County but less appreciated by the competitors on the day. Thankfully, although remaining overcast for the rest of the event, very little rain beyond that opening drizzle actually felL, albeit conditions remained cool – more waterproofs and gilets than shorts and sunglasses.Â
The Boys and Girls in the field were each playing in individual events, with some of the competitors selected as part of a 3 player representative team making up the Junior Champion Club event.Â
The best score on the day was an impressive 42 points by Tom Norman of Mid Herts, winning the Boys Spring Meeting Handicap prize in the process. The best Girls score was an excellent 38 points achieved by both Keira Johnston of Harpenden & Lilly Newton of Bishops Storford, however a better back 9 from Lilly was the decider on the winner of the Girls Spring Handicap Cup. The best scratch scores on the day were achieved by Tala Clarke of Knebworth for the girls with a formidable 39 points -3 score and 33 points +3 score from George Lancaster of Sandy Lodge.Â
The Junior Champion Club event was keenly contested with the top 6 teams within 5 points of each other. Winners on the day after a tie on 76 points, but decided by virtue of a countback using the unused 3rd player score, 29 vs 26, was the team from Aldenham, consisting of Louie Avci, Ronnie Shinkwin – nephew of former Herts Golf County player and current European Tour Pro Callum Shinkwin and Finlay O’Connor. The team who narrowly missed out on top spot were the Mid Herts team of Tom Norman, Lily Wrangle & Seth Grant. In 3rd place were the Harpenden team of Keira Johnston, Joseph Wise & Stassie Scott just 1 point back of the winning score on 75 points.Â
Aldenham will now progress to represent Hertfordshire at the England Golf Junior Champion Club Final event played at Spalding Golf Club, Lincolnshire in August.Â
Our thanks to our hosts Redbourn Golf Club for allowing us the use of their facilities for the day.Â
