County Championships

The men’s and women’s County Championship will be played at Berkhamsted, with the men’s strokeplay qualifying held on Thursday May 29th and the women’s on Friday May 30th.

There is one change in the men’s competition this year, in line with how England Golf manages entries for its major events. When identifying players with the lowest handicap index for direct entry to the strokeplay qualifying, a check will be made to ensure a player’s General Play scores are not significantly lower than their Competition scores. Specifically, where a player’s handicap record contains 4 or more General Play scores and their General Play score differential is 4 or more strokes lower than their Competition score differential, direct entry to the Championship will be denied and they will instead be added to the field for the Herts Salver.

Women’s Champion Club

The women’s Champion Club is a relatively new event that is played as part of the County Championship. It’s growing in significance as the winners now go on to represent the county in England Golf’s Women’s Champion Club later in the year.

It’s for teams of 3 but only the best 2 scores count, so any club with at least 2 players in the County Championship field will automatically be considered as entered for the team event

It’s a good reason for trying to get a 2nd or 3rd woman from your club to enter the Championship, as they could all end up going away for a weekend to compete in a major national event.

Women’s Seniors Championship

This Championship has traditionally been played in October when courses and the weather weren’t necessarily at their best. Having received positive responses to a survey of likely competitors, the event is moving and will now be played at Berkhamsted on the same day as the strokeplay qualifying for the Women’s County Championship – Friday May 30th. Anyone who wants to play in both events may still do so – her morning score in the County Championship qualifying will be treated as her entry to the Seniors Championship.

Anyone playing in both will only have to pay the County Championships entry fee.

Hopefully good weather, a lovely course and a new date will produce a bumper entry!

Women’s Seniors Challenge

Following the popularity of the men’s Seniors Challenge, we are introducing a new, equivalent Women’s Senior Challenge on the date in October vacated by the Seniors Championship.

This will be an 18 hole handicap stableford, open to all women in the county aged 50 or over with a handicap index of 36 or less. This year it will be played on the New course at Essendon on October 6th.
