19 teams/38 pairs/76 players took part yesterday (Mon 19 October) in our annual Club Officials Challenge event, played this year at Hadley Wood GC, located on the outskirts of Barnet & Cockfosters.
The event sees teams of 4 players, who all play some role in working or volunteering at club level. The pairs are then split up to play with a pair from another club, and then the club pairs scores are combined together to create a cumulative team score.
The course, which has undergone significant renovation in the last 5 years, was looking and playing resplendent in the autumnal sun on the day. The main defence of the course being the exceptionally tricky greens complexes, with virtually no easy putts anywhere around the course.
The team from The Shire London faired the best on the day with an excellent cumulative score of 78 points across both pairs, helped with an equal best of the day score of 43 points from Amar Virk & Dean Edwards. In 2nd place were the team from Essendon on 75 points represented by Steve Bloomfield & Barry Middleton and Paul Densham & Matthew Barbrook.
The spot prizes were both won by Hertfordshire Golf Board & Committee members, men’s nearest the pin on the 17th hole by Brendan Henry, and after no female hit the green on the par 3 7th hole to win the nearest the pin there, the prize went to the lady involved in the best pairs score which was Suzanne Thrower, who scored 37 points with the aforementioned Brendan.
The day appeared to be a great success with lots of happy faces. Our thanks to Hadley Wood GC for hosting. Next year’s event is provisionally booked at Hanbury Manor G&CC on Monday 18th October 2027.
