1st Team draw with Bedfordshire and struggle at SEG Qualifier
The 1st Team’s title aspirations meekly petered out at West Herts on Sunday (2 Aug) with a 6-6 draw against Bedfordshire. A victory was required in this our penultimate match which would have left us with all to play for in the final match against the currently unbeaten Essex.
The morning foursomes ended with honours even at 2-2, Lewis Watcham and Laurie Owen combined for a 2&1 win in the top match, quickly followed by losses by two holes for the pairings of Mitchell Steel and Jordan Bass, and also for James Egerton and Luke Colgate. George Welsh and George Williams were comprehensive winners 7&5 in the final match.
The first five matches in the afternoon singles saw Hertfordshire starting brightly securing 3.5 points, George Williams winning the top match by 2 holes, followed by wins for James Egerton 7&5 and Luke Colgate 5&4, Jordan Bass secured a half. However the final three matches only produced half a point, which was secured by Lewis Watcham on the final green.
The 1st teams final SEG league fixture is against Essex at West Herts on Sunday 30th August.
At the recent South East Group Men’s Qualifier which took place at Hendon Golf Club in Middlesex in July, the only winner proved to be the golf course, with the firm greens and hard fast running fairways causing continual problems, as did the long rough, for all competitors. As the rounds continued, groups were on the course for nearly 5 hours due to the continual delays for lost balls.
Hertfordshire played their way out of the contention in the morning round with Mitchell Steel’s 76 and Lewis Watcham’s 77 being the best Herts team scores recorded. The afternoon round showed an overall improvement from the team, bettering their morning total by 23 shots, the best scores being recorded by Luke Colgate with 71 and Lewis Watcham with 72.
Of the morning scores only one of the 66 competitors beat Par with a one under 69 and only two others matched the par of 70. The afternoon round fared only slightly better with three scores beating Par and three at level. Individually there was only one score under Par at 2 under and one at level over the 36 holes. For both the morning and afternoon rounds the SSS went to 74. The winning county were Hampshire, who now will represent the South East Group at the national final.
