1st Team win final match of season vs Essex

Hertfordshire signed off their 2015 season with a 7-5 win over the league winners Essex at West Herts Golf Club, which did not pass without incident. Hertfordshire were on the back foot before the match even commenced, when Jordan Bass could not play due to illness, a replacement at an hour’s notice was not a possibility, however the County stalwart John Ambridge made himself available to play in the afternoon singles.

With the loss of the first point due to the walk over, Hertfordshire’s top pair of Tony Wilkins and Gordon Forster recorded a fine 4&3 win, before Luke Colgate and Laurie Owen gained a well deserved half. The final match on the course went to the last hole with Joel Field and Adam Berg Capin losing a very tight and competitive match. On the balance of play it was felt that the 2.5 to 1.5 deficit was a good result at lunch and left us with a good opportunity in the afternoon singles to turn round the deficit.

With John Ambridge ready to step in Essex were unfortunate to lose one of their players which gave John a point for the singles without hitting a shot, redressing the balance. The first three matches were all very close with Joel Field taking the top match by one hole, Tony Wilkins going down by one hole and Gordon Forster gaining a half. After Luke Colgate’s 4&3 defeat  the last three remaining matches all went Hertfordshire’s way, with debutantes Adam Berg Capin winning 5&3 and Louis Campbell winning 4&2, producing some very good golf for their well deserved wins and Laurie Owen producing the quality shots when required to record a one hole win.

All in all a very good and committed team performance to end the season on.
