1st Team narrowly lose out to Essex

L TO R – ANDY GALL, GEORGE WELSH, CHRIS EDWARDS, ALEX COLLMAN, JOE BROOKS, LEWIS WATCHAM, LAURIE OWEN, MARCUS FOX & GEOFF IDDENDEN (CPT)

A victory or a draw in this fixture would have kept our title aspirations on track, however Hertfordshire fell out of contention for South East league honours with a 7-5 defeat to Essex at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club on Sunday (Aug 3).

In what was a very competitive and hard fought match, the catalyst for the defeat was a 3-1 reverse in the morning foursomes, where all  matches went to the 18th hole. Lewis Watcham and Marcus Fox, both of Harpenden Common, secured the only point for Hertfordshire with a 1 hole victory.

The afternoon singles started brightly with Joe Brooks winning the top match 2&1, before 3 defeats left Hertfordshire needing to win the remaining matches. This ultimately proved to be unobtainable, despite good victories for Lewis Watcham 4&3, Alex Collman 3&2 and George Welsh 3&1.

Whilst the match result was disappointing, the overall attitude and performance of the team was commendable.

The 1st Team’s last match of the season is against BB&O on ‘home ground’ at West Herts on Sunday 31 August.
