The West Course at Moor Park hosted the Mixed County Foursomes Championship on Friday 29th August.
The 36 holes scratch tournament looked under threat early on with torrential rain falling as the players advanced around the front 9. Fortunately, just as some of the greens were starting to flood in places, the rain eased up and the course started to drain.
The morning conditions made for tough scoring, however there were still some excellent scores being posted and particularly that of Tala Clarke and Al McCulloch of Knebworth, who gelled to return an excellent score of 70 and hold a 7 stroke lead over the field at lunchtime.
Afternoon conditions were much kinder, the sunshine came out and raised the temperature by a few degrees.
The Championship had been brought forward in the diary this year to encourage more juniors to participate before returning to school and it was reflected with a number of juniors playing, raising the number of pairs to 21 this year from just 14 in 2024.
And it was the juniors who took a number of the prizes.
In the Handicap Championship, Fenton Bailey, a junior at Moor Park took the Runner prize with his partner Sarah MacAlpine, just missing out by a shot from winners Michelle Gardner and James Thomson of Brookmans Park.
In the Scratch Championship, juniors were to be involved in all the top 3 prizes.
Amelia Parker teamed up with her father Martin, both of Letchworth to take 3rd place, Amelie Stewart of Brocket Hall teamed up with Andy Collie of Welwyn Garden City to pick up the Runners Up prize but it was Tala Clarke’s partnership with Al McCulloch that would take the title.
