Mens Seniors Team win Southern Counties Foursomes Trophy at Weston-Super-Mare

Mens County Seniors claim Regional Foursomes title

Report from Mens Seniors Captain Simon Kay;

Match report – Southern Counties Men’s Seniors Foursomes Final.

After our commanding victory in the Foursomes qualifier in August, the team travelled to the final at Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club. The team were feeling confident, with only one player change from the qualifier, but recognized the opposition would be strong and in the case of Gloucestershire, a tad unknown.

The course was playing very tricky with links like conditions and a strong wind being either behind or ahead.

The morning play was successful with wins from Paul Nancarrow/Tye Cater, Mark Gershinson/Garry Cooper and Nick Davis/ Dominic Ronan. Unfortunately, we had 2 losses and one specifically against Sussex who ended the morning session in the lead. However, it was very tight between Sussex, Gloucestershire and Herts with only a half point between the 3 teams. We had been reminded that “match point difference” would be used in the case of a tie.

A strong afternoon performance was needed with 2 matches against Sussex. The Captain’s promise of chocolate cake was once again deployed! Paul Nancarrow/Tye Carter and Mark Gershinson/Garry Cooper once again got us off to a strong start with wins, including Paul Nancarrow closing out their match on the long 18th  with his second short to 5 feet. Meanwhile, Phil Embleton/Simon Kay were enjoying a more fruitful afternoon with an 8/7 win over Beds, a significant impact on our match point tally. This left the two matches against Sussex. Unfortunately Nick Davis/Dominic Ronan lost on the last after a tough battle. However, David Scammel/David Lang were always in control of their game with David Scammell holing a monster putt to seal their victory.

The conclusion to all of this was that Herts accumulated 7 points. Sussex won their remaining match on the course to have the same total, however Herts had a much stronger match point difference and the victory.

A really nice way to end the season and a great team performance where the spirit shone through.
