Our Mens Mid Age Championship event was played yesterday, Monday 21st July, at Letchworth Golf Club, along with Royston GC, our most northerly outposts in the County. The event is a 36 hole medal strokeplay tournament for male players aged between 35 and 54 years old on the day of the event, with Handicap Indexes of 12.4 and below.
The weather over the weekend leading up to the event was thankfully very wet after the extremely dry spring and summer we’ve experienced so far in the South East of England. The rain just softened the course up and allowed more for the type of target golf that lends itself to lower scoring.
The weather on the day started off very pleasant indeed, sunny, mild and calm with little to no wind. However, the forecast as the day progressed was very mixed with the potential for heavy showers and thunderstorms. In the end we experienced one short but heavy shower imidway through round 2 and although we had many rumbles of thunder around us and some dark troublesome skies, thankfully any delays for electrical activity were avoided during play.
Defending Champion Tony Mitchell of Harpenden Common made a good defence of his title, with rounds of 72 and 71 for a +1 total for the day, narrowly outside the top 3 and a podium finish.
Winner on the day was Niall Johnston of the home club with an excellent score of 136 -6 for day and rounds of 69 & a best of the day pm 67. Niall would edge his playing partner Tony Wilkins of Harpenden Common by 1 shot from the title, Tony with rounds of 69 & 68 for a 137 -5 total for the day. In 3rd place was Tom Turner of Harpenden Common with 141 -1 for the day. In the Handicap category, Adam Ginty of Mill Green won the runners-up voucher with 143 +1 nett score and Glenn Evans of Great Hadham won the Handicap prize with 141 -1.
As the prizegiving was taking place, the heavens opened and loud thunder and lightning was right overhead the clubhouse – great timing!
Our thanks to Letchworth for hosting the event and allowing us the use of the facilities for the day.
The 2026 event will be held at Knebworth Golf Club on Monday 13th July.
