Our first ‘major’ event of the County season was played yesterday (Sun 12 May) at South Herts GC in Totteridge, Barnet. The event is a 36 hole scratch medal, with each of the 22 competing clubs with 3 representatives each, in an all scores to count format.
The event was bathed in wall to wall sunshine and warm temperatures all day. Truly a stunning day to play golf, and a rarity this year to date.
The course, which had dried out and firmed up significantly in the past week or so, was presented excellently and as always at the South Herts club, the greens provided a stern test for all playing on the day.
At the halfway point of 18 holes it was extremely tight, with defending champions Letchworth leading by 1 shot on +6 as a team from Harpenden Common on +7 and Ashridge in 3rd a further 2 shots back on +9 and more clubs just a further couple behind them. All to play for in the pm round.
However, Letchworth had other ideas and werent for budging from their perch as they returned an sparkling afternoon cumulative score of -7, with all 3 players scoring under par rounds – Mens 1st Team Manager Phil Dormer with a best of the day 68 (-4), the ever steady Niall Johnston with 70(-2) and Kiertan Sangha with a 71 (-1).
Letchworth would stretch their lead to eventually win by 11 shots from runners up Harpenden Common, represented by Laurie Owen, Tom Turner and Tony Wilkins, on +10, a score in most years likely good enough to win. Knebworth finished 3rd on +25 represented by Warren Clarke, Jamie Jackson & Callum McCarthy,
Letchworth will now progress to represent Hertfordshire at the England Golf Champion Club Final, this year played at Stanton-on-the-Wolds GC in Nottinghamshire in September. We wish them all the best as and when.
Our thanks to South Herts GC for allowing us use of their course and facility for a full weekend day in the playing season and for their staff for their hospitality in looking after the competitiors and county officials on the day.
