The South East Regional Schools Championship took place yesterday (Tue 30 May), played in Hertfordshire at Aldenham G&CC on the outskirts of Watford. The event is held on a rota by the 6 counties that make up the South East Schools region, so Herts host this event once every 6 years.
Some last minute pull outs meant that less than the full compliment of 66 players made up he field in the event, which sees Boys & Girls whom have all qualified to play through their own in-house County Schools Championships played earlier in this current School Year. There are seperate Boys & Girls Individual & Team competitons, but the main prize if for the top 10 Boys and top 5 Girls respectively who then progress to play in the National Schools Championship, played at the end of next month at The Kendleshire near Bristol.
The weather on the day was decidely cold for late May with the persistent of late North Easterly wind playing havoc with both the air temperature as well as the competitors golf balls on the day. This combined with the dry conditions caused by no real rainfall for the past 3 weeks made the course play extremely difficult on the day, so patience was required and certainly some fortune would not have gone amiss either.
Hertfordshire did manage to claim the Boys Team prize on the day, best 3 from 4 gross scores for both rounds, with a cumulative score of 462 (+42) achieved by the team of Louie Bloxham of Welwyn Garden City, Harry Cox of Welwyn Garden City, Josh Robinson of Harpenden and Ben Sessions of Bishop’s Stortford.
The Boys Individual prize was won by Theo Baker of Essex on 153 (+13), with best placed Herts player Josh Robinson 1 shot back as the runner-up on 154, but with a better pm round of 76, edging fellow team mate Harry Cox into 3rd.
The Girls Individual prize was won by Alexandra Sparrow of Suffolk on 157 (+15), by 3 shots from Doris Thomas and Lillia Copeman, both of Norfolk. The Norfolk Girls did however claim the Girls Team prize, best 2 from 3 gross scores for both rounds, with the aformentioned Doris and Lillia joined by Hettie Conway for a cumulative team score of 320 (+36).
Our thanks to Aldenham for hosting the event and best of luck to all those who qualifed through to the Nationals.
