Report from Girls manager clare mulvaney
Â
The girls County team travelled to Wensum Valley in Norfolk for their County Match Week this year and with storm Floris blowing through on the Monday and Tuesday it was a baptism of fire for our first-timers Amelia Parker (Letchworth), Amelie Stewart (Brocket), Lily Hertz (Essendon) and Lily Wrangle (Mid Herts). Coupled with the more experienced players, Alecia Ibekwem, Ava Gadsby and Caitlin Garrard (Capt) fought hard in the competition to lose only one of their five matches – to eventual winners, Essex.
Â
The week was one of fine margins with only two points separating first and fourth place.
Draws to Bedfordshire and Norfolk ultimately proved costly and on another day, a different lie, a drop in the wind and, of course, a holed putt could have made the difference.
Â
Points worthy of mention are that the girls go out in handicap order and Ava Gadsby, playing in only her second County Match Week at the age of 13, took up this mantle. She had three tremendously close games, sometimes competing against plus handicap girls.
Â
Amelia Parker, also aged 13, won 4 out of her 5 matches showing resilience above her years.
Â
Next year, sees all the same girls eligible for selection so we’ll wait with bated breath to see what another twelve months of golf brings.
