Our County Fourball Championship event, which sees pairs of male, female and mixed gender golfers from all over the County took place yesterday, Monday 14th September, at Bishop’s Stortford GC, our most easterly outpost in Hertfordshire.
A total of 28 pairs/56 golfers took part, playing 18 holes fourball betterball stableford, played off 85% handicap allowance. For this event pairs are nominated by their clubs, often as winners of club fourball events from either the previous or current year. This often makes for a competitive event full of winning golfers!
A rather damp start after an incredible 20mm of rainfall the previous night in the vicinity of the course, of which the Course Manager was delighted to receive after our recent drought conditions in the South East, but thankfully the rain disappeared and allowed for a dry, if rather overcast and gloomy day for the competitors.
As is often the case, home advantage once again proved pivotal when home members Nick Hadley and Steve Wright returned the best and winning score on the day with a terrific 44 points, to take home the cup by a single point by nearest rivals, and best female score, achieved by Emma Dawson-Goodey and Lesley Cassidy of Essendon on 43 points. In 3rd position were Sam Reyner & Alex Clark of Welwyn Garden City.
The competitors were looked after extremely well on the day, with excellent services provided by the host club, excellent food before and after their rounds and enjoyed the surroundings of the newly renovated clubhouse lounge and function areas.
