Practice day at Fynn Valley on Tuesday showed everyone the challenges that would face them over the three match days.
The golf course at Fynn Valley has not coped well with the harsh hot conditions we are experiencing. The fairways were toasted to a crisp. Tee boxes and greens were suffering too. But the message to all players was ‘it’s the same conditions for everyone’.
However, the staff of Fynn Valley could not have done more to help. At all times they were hospitable working tirelessly to ensure everyone had the best possible experience.
Wednesday was a warm day all players had a good range and putting session with Jo and Glen before having a quick lunch before taking on Norfolk in the afternoon. All those who played made a quick start, the previous days practice round showing how valuable it was. Early wins from Amelia and Caitlin would prove to be vital when the overall final result was decided. A great 6 – 0 win was recorded.
Thursday dawned – a much cooler breezy day. The morning session saw us play Bedfordshire. Our opponents had only brought six players with them and unfortunately, one of their girls was unwell and unable to play against us. This meant we went into the match a game up! Once again, we were quickly up in the remaining five matches. Ava and Amelia quickly finishing their games and our rookie Abi recording a great first win. The match was won 4 – 2.
The afternoon saw us playing us playing Suffolk, always a challenging match. Games one and two were nip and tuck over the 18 holes, both Ava and Amelia digging deep and keep coming back at their opponents. They were both disappointed to lose on the 18 after playing so well. Abi won and Lily W recorded her first ever win for Hertfordshire. We lost this match 4- 2.Â
Friday, the last day, all to play for!
The players were all keen and eager to perform well. An early range and putting session began the day. Jo and Glen once again giving pre match support and information to all. Cambs and Hunts were our morning opponents. Hertfordshire being magnificent 6 – 0 winners. A great morning’s golf with everyone playing with great skill and determination.
Friday afternoons opponents were Essex. Always strong opponents however, the team were determined to give their all and play their best golf. The top three matches were hard fought with our players giving their all to try to come out on top. Unfortunately, things did not go our way and these games were narrowly lost. Lily H played a fabulous round and took her opponent to the 18 green where there was a large audience. Lily held her nerve and achieved a fabulous halve.
The match result Essex won 51/2 – 1/2.
We knew the overall result was tight but were delighted that Hertfordshire were announced as runners up. This was achieved as we have won more games than Bedfordshire and Suffolk. Well done to all the girls who played their play and determination is to be congratulated. Thanks must go to Jo and Glen for their coaching and wise advice to all players.
