The 1st of the age group specific county championship events was played last weekend (Sun 28th June), with the playing of the County Mens Under 35s Championship, which took place at Brickendon Grange Golf Club, located between Hertford and Broxbourne in the south east of the county.Â
This event was previously played as the Colts Championship and dates back to the 1980’s, and was limited to all players under the age of 21, but in recent years has altered to restrict junior boys from playing, but increasing the upper age limit to 34.Â
The event is played as a 36 hole medal strokeplay played off scratch.Â
The venue for the event is traditionally the venue for the forthcoming County Championships the following year. 2027 will be the first time in its 60 year history that Brickendon Grange will have held the flagship Championship events.Â
After the recent heatwave across southern England, thankfully the temperature on the day never exceeded 24 degrees and the players and officials were extremely grateful for that! A gusty breeze for much of the day kept temperatures cooler and providing more challenge.Â
The course was in superb condition, with the greens rolling smoothly and with a good pace and presentation across the course first class.Â
County Mens 1st squad player Dan Stannard of The Hertfordshire led after the morning 18 holes with a steady round of 72 +1, by a single shot from George Hall of Porters Park & Castor Morris of Sandy Lodge both on 73 +2.
Castor added another 73 in the afternoon round, from one of the 1st groups in to post an early clubhouse lead of 146 +4 for the day.Â
This was eventually bettered by another Mens 1st Team player, the long hitting Jamie Lacy of Stocks, who added a pm 70 -1 to his morning round of 74 +3, in which included a 1 shot penalty for accidently moving his ball while using his yardage device, with a total of 144 +2 for the day.Â
In the last match in from the course halfway leader Dan added a best of the day gross 69 -2 to take the title by 3 shots on a score of 141 -1 for the day. Congratulations to Dan on his victory.Â
Our thanks to Brickendon Grange for their efforts in hosting us and we very much look forward to those County Championship events next year, which we’re sure will be a great success.Â
The 2027 Mens Under 35s Championship will take place on Sunday 27th June at Sandy Lodge GC.
