Match Reports from Men’s Seniors Captain Simon Kay;
Herts vs Middlesex
The Senior County team played its second league match of the season having had our previous attempt at playing Middlesex postponed due to the weather. The match was played at our new home venue, West Herts GC, where we were warmly welcomed and looked after. As reported after our first match of the season against Essex, with so few games to play in the League our loss against Essex made our remining games academic to winning the League, as Essex have already played and won all 4 games.
The match afforded us the opportunity to blood a few new players for their League debut, Nick Leconte and Paul Marshall.
The match started fairly evenly apart from John Ambridge’s game as he won by the 11th. After 9 holes we held a slight advantage but we were behind in our first two games. Further down the order things were going well with chip-ins from the same place on the 7th from Paul Marshall and Mitchell Steel, and both going on to win comfortably. Our local boy Dominic Ronan also won his match. As the weather turned wet Mark Gershinson turned his game round to get a half, as did David Lang winning on the 18th. Nick Leconte also came to the last all square but won the hole for another victory. This left the last few players to manage the worst of the weather and both Paul Nancarrow and David Scammell continued the winning theme
A comfortable win in the end of 8 ½ – 1 ½. Our next match is against BB&O in early September.
Herts vs BB&O
The Senior County team played its third league match of the season at home, West Herts GC, where we were warmly welcomed and looked after. Whilst the League was lost, as previously reported, it is important that we maintain a winning run to the end of the season, and that is exactly what the team did!!
The match afforded us the opportunity to blood a further new player to the League, Tony Grover.
The match as usual started evenly with very little between the sides for much of the afternoon. Paul Nancarrow led out the team and had a fine win which was followed by sizeable wins by John Ambridge and Dominic Ronan. The next few matches were very tight with Mitchell Steel winning on the last and Nick Davis unfortunately losing the 18tht to an eagle bunker hole out to half his match. This left the last 5 matches where Paddy Barnham won his match against a quality opponent, Tye Carter managed a half and Phil Embleton, making birdie on the 18th to square his match, having been dormie 2 down.
Some real fighting spirit shown by the team today and in the end a good 6 ½ – 3 ½ victory.
Our next match is against Bedfordshire on September 11th.
