Alex Lee (Stevenage) Colts Champion 2014

Alex Lee of Stevenage became the HGU Colts Champion at Hadley Wood GC on Sunday (22 June), when he shot two excellent consistent scores of 70 (-2), followed by an afternoon 72 (level) for a total of 142 (-2), to win by 4 shots from his nearest rival.

On a bright and warm Summer’s day, the Hadley Wood course looked and played magnificently, with many of the competitors now very much looking forward to the County Championship which Hadley Wood will host next year.

After the morning round, Josh Higham of Brocket Hall led with a hugely impressive 67 (-5), making 5 birdies and no blemishing bogeys on the scorecard. The score was testament to the hard work Josh has been putting into his golf in the last 6 months. Josh led by 3 shots from Alex Lee on 70 (-2), with Karl Vincent of The Hertfordshire, Luke Hynes of Porters Park and Rauri Galasahan of West Herts a further 2 shots back on 72 (level).

However Josh couldnt follow up on his tremendous morning round and faded with an afternoon 81 (+9) to finish on 148 (+4) and out of contention.

Alex Macarthur of Letchworth, current Colts Team Captain, shot a best of the afternoon 71 (-1) to add to his disappointing morning round of 77 (+5), for a total of 148 (+4), tied with Higham.

For a short while, Harry Goddard of Welwyn Garden City, one of the youngest players in the field at 14 years old, led when he added an afternoon 72 (level) to his morning 74 (+2) for a total of 146 (+2).

However, Lee’s consistency saw him through, despite a mid round wobble with a double bogey on the long par 4 5th hole, followed by a bogey on the 6th.

3 players ended up on 147 (+3) for the day, a young trio of Hynes, Vincent and Louix Monk of the Hertfordshire, with Monk taking 3rd place by virtue of a best afternoon round of 73 (+1) of the trio.

The CSS was 72 in the morning and 73 in the afternoon.

Next year’s Colts Championship will be at Moor Park GC on Sunday 28th June.
