Rule of the Week

Preferred Lies - Test Your Knowledge

It’s that time of year when preferred Lies are rolled out across the UK, but do you really know the do’s and don’ts?

True or False

  1. You must mark your ball before taking a preferred lie?
  2. You can swap your ball whilst taking a preferred lie?
  3. Having taken a preferred lie, you can move it again within the permitted area if you are unhappy with the first placement?

Answers

  1. False, whilst it is recommended to mark your ball to avoid dispute, it is not a requirement of the rules.
  2. True, you are permitted to change your ball when taking a preferred lie. Should you wish to do this, notify a playing partner.
  3. False, once you have let go of the ball on the first placement, the ball is now in play, moving it again would incur a 1 stroke penalty.
