Bury St.Edmunds Golf Club hosted the East Region Schools Championship on Thursday 28th May and it proved to be a great day for our Hertfordshire Boys.
With qualification secured from our County Schools Rosebowl last October at Mill Green, we had representation with 4 boys, James Andrews (Letchworth), Jaego Gardiner (Porters Park), Nick Curran (Sandy Lodge) and James Matthews (Gog Magog) along with 2 girls, Lily Hertz (Essendon) and Lilly Newton (Bishop’s Stortford).
A morning round of 71 -1 from Nick Curran placed him joint leader, a solid round of 74 from Jaego Gardiner had him well placed and a 79 +7 seemed to have left James Andrews somewhat adrift.
However, things all changed in the afternoon, a stunning round of 67 -5 elevated James all the way up into a tie at the top alongside Jaego, who had an impressive 72 level.
The two Hertfordshire boys had to be separated on countback, with James’s storming afternoon round securing him the title.
With this championship acting as qualification for the National Finals at Kendleston Park, Derbyshire, 21/22nd June, Nick Curran’s solid 6th place finish meant that he joins James and Jaego into the Finals.
On the girls side, both Lily and Lilly had fantastic afternoon rounds. Although it is a scratch championship, they both played well under their handicaps, with Lily Hertz nett 69 and Lilly Newton’s nett 70 placing them best and runner up nett for the pm round. Although they missed out on qualification, they could come away feel very proud of their performance.
