The Mens County Foursomes Championship was played yesterday (Sun 21 Sep) at Brookmans Park and an exciting finish, somewhat earlier in the day than initially anticipated, saw the West Herts pair of Matthew Gauntlett & Sean Kelly win the title on the 2nd extra hole of a sudden death play off.
On arrival on first light, heavy overnight rain had rendered the course unplayable with several flooded greens. However, a window of opportunity in the late morning/early afternoon of dry weather allowed the event to be completed, albeit over just 18 holes instead of the normal 36.
The best score returned was an impressive 68 (-3) gross from both the aformentioned, along with Warren Clarke & Callum McCarthy of Knebworth. A sudden death play off was required to determine our winners and after both pairs made regulation pars on the 1st, a 25 footer for birdie on the par 4 closing hole from Sean sealed the win for the West Herts pair.
It was a double win on the day for West Herts as they carried off the Peggy Harkett Memorial Trophy for the best cumulative team score with Sean & Matthew added to by Ronnie Gibb & Noah Peters.
Our thanks to Brookmans Park for hosting us and for their staff for their considerable efforts to get the event played at all. Next years event will be hosted by Sandy Lodge.
