Our annual County Mixed Foursomes Championship event was played yesterday (Tuesday 17 September) on a glorious autumn day at Hanbury Manor Golf & Country Club, located just off the A10 between Hertford and Ware.
14 pairs took part, playing 36 holes foursomes medal strokeplay, with the females all playing the tee shots on the odd numbered holes in the morning and then the reverse in the afternoon round.
After the morning round there was a tie at the top of the scratch leaderboard with 2 pairs returning an excellent gross score of 76 (+4), namely Simmi Ciccone & David Jackson of Hadley Wood, alongside playing partners Birgette Karle & Paul Nancarrow of Old Fold Manor. They would share a 7 shot lead, but in this format even that is not necessarily a definative enough of a lead to guarantee the winners would come from that group.
Indeed in the pm round the leaders did come back to the field, but Simmi & David did just enough to pip Birgitte & Paul by one shot, along with the pair of father & daughter, Peter Hutchinson & Kelly Cooke, who returned a best of the afternoon round of 79 gross to edge the aformentioned Birgette & Paul for the runners up spot. Simmi & David’s total for the day was 163 (+19), with Kelly & Peter and Birgette & Paul all on 164 (+20).
In the Handicap division we had much clearer winners with the Brookmans Park pairing of Wendy Plummer & Andrew Gardner return excellent nett scores of 72-72 for a 144 level par total, good enough to take the Handicap prize by some distance.
The day was a great success, with the competitors all enjoying the challenge of the format and Hanbury Manor being superb hosts. We hope that the 2025 event at Moor Park on their West Course provides a greater level of entries to make even more of the day.
