The recent inclement weather since the weekend has resulted in localised flash flooding across the South of England. Thankfully todays (Thu 26 Sep) event, the Mens Seniors Challenge Trophy, went ahead as scheduled, in no small part thanks to the sterling efforts of the greenstaff at host club Letchworth GC, to get the event on by pushing off the standing water off most of the greens before many of the competitors had arrived on site.

56 male senior competitors took part in the annual event from all over the county, with handicaps ranging from 5 to 28, playing 18 holes of stableford format to determine our challenge winner.

Despite heavy rain overnight and first thing, the vast majority of the rounds were played in the dry, with only a few showers experienced, and even a brief but welcome report of the sun being out at one point. However, not long after the last match on the course had putted out, the heavens opened once again. So all in all, a very well timed event!

39 points was the best score returned on the day, with 5 players returning said score. The best of these and therefore our winner was Robert Jones of Hadley Wood, with the best back 6 holes after all of the top 3 all had back 9’s of 19 points. Runner Up was Adrian Marshall of Harpenden and in 3rd was Peter Crawford of Arkley. Also on 39 points were Alastair Fraser of Old Fold Manor and Terry Croker of Bishops Stortford, both of whom won age category prizes.

Our thanks to our hosts Letchworth GC for their considerable efforts all round and we look forward to holding the event next year, hopefully with some better weather conditions before, during and after!
